Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Windshield/Windows

Problem:

Scratch on the windshield.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Jeweler's rouge / ferric oxide

  • Rags/cloths

Solution:

Depending on the severity of the scratch on your vehicle's windshield, you may either fix the scratch on your own or require the services of an auto glass company.

Short of calling an auto glass company to have your windshield replaced or extensively repaired, if the scratch is not too deep, you may want to try applying jeweler's rouge (a chemical compound also known as, and is made up of, ferric oxide) on it, specifically using a rag/cloth to rub the rouge on the scratch as a polishing agent so as to polish/rub it out.  Once you're done applying it, be sure to wash off the residue of it.

If this doesn't work, an auto glass technician may have to use a stronger polishing agent that is used commercially for such purposes as to rubbing out scratches; short of this, the ultimate action would be to have the windshield replaced.

Check with your vehicle/car insurance to see if your insurance policy covers windshield repair or windshield replacement, providing either a reduction on the cost of having it done or covering the incurred cost altogether.

So, try the jeweler's rouge, and, if not, it will "pay" to know whether your insurance company will help bear the cost of either replacing or repairing your windshield by an auto glass company.
