Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Transmission System

Problem:

Stuck in one gear.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

In a manual transmission, if the shift lever gets stuck in any one of the gears, the following may be probable causes of this vehicle problem that you should consider checking:

  • The transmission cables are not lubricated well;

  • The transmission cables and their connections are not set correctly;

  • The synchronizer strut retainer plate is malfunctioning, causing the spring and gear of the synchronizer to irregularly lock up; or

  • The shift-selector cable is incorrectly set so as to interfere with other mechanical components or is otherwise damaged.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your vehicle's problem, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the problem.
