Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Transmission System

Problem:

Shifting in automatic transmission is difficult during cold temperatures.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

If you find it difficult to shift the gears of your vehicle that has automatic transmission during cold weather, it may be normal for some transmission systems, but aside from that, the following may be probable causes of this gear-shift difficulty that you should consider checking:

  • The transmission fluid may be contaminated and bad;

  • The transmission filter may be damaged;

  • The accumulator seal may be damaged as result of contracting from the cold weather;

  • The valve body of the transmission, particularly its check ball, may be malfunctioning; or

  • The governor of the transmission may be malfunctioning.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your vehicle's problem, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the problem.
