Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Shock Absorbers

Maintenance Issues:

How to tell when the shock absorbers of your vehicle are in need of a replacement.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Guide:

The shock absorbers of your vehicle will give you signs that they are in need of a replacement.  These signs that you should look out for include the following:

  • Fluid is found on the shock absorber tube;

  • indentations are noticed on the shock absorber tube;

  • The bushings of the shock absorbers are coming apart;

  • The vehicle makes sounds (like a clinking sound) or dips below while it is driven at around 25 mph over a railroad track or something similar; or

  • For the certain identification of bad shock absorbers, when each shock absorber is removed and is pulled out and compressed (while the mount towards the bottom is stabilized), one finds there lacks a healthy dose of resistance.

When you observe any of these signs, you may have to replace your shock absorbers.
