Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Radiator

Maintenance Issues:

How to properly mix your antifreeze / coolant with water.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Brand name ethylene glycol-based antifreeze / coolant

  • Distilled water

  • Arctic Blend™ by EET Corp.

Guide:

The proper solution mix of your brand name ethylene glycol-based antifreeze / coolant with water is very important to ensure that your vehicle receives the intended cooling effect of the ethylene glycol-based product; an improper solution mix can cause many cooling problems.  Similarly, please note that you should not just use any water, such as tap water, in the mixture of your antifreeze / coolant.  Such water can cause undue scaling and corrosion in the engine.  Instead, mix the antifreeze / coolant with distilled water.

So, with that said, the primary determining factor of the solution ratio between the antifreeze / coolant and water is the expected climate in which you will be driving your vehicle.  For driving generally in most parts of the country, the solution mix ratio of 50:50 (50 parts ethylene glycol-based antifreeze / coolant to 50 parts distilled water) is appropriate.  Otherwise, for really cold climates, you may opt for a 60:40 mixture (60 parts ethylene glycol-based antifreeze / coolant to 40 parts distilled water).

If you really feel uncomfortable about the adequacy of your mixture of antifreeze / coolant and water, you can consider using a product like Arctic Blend™, which comes already as a premixed solution of reconstituted antifreeze / coolant and de-ionized water so as not to potentially aggravate the occurrence of scaling and corrosion in the engine.  Though, before you buy Arctic Blend™, because of its recycled antifreeze / coolant component, be sure to verify that it meets the standards of your vehicle manufacturer, especially if you are very conscientious in avoiding the nullification and voidance of your vehicle warranty.
