Informational Topic:

Warranties that are for a "lifetime," you should be cautious of them.

The Information You Need:

Lifetime warranties, admittedly, may be an attractive offer even to the most savvy and cautious consumer, but before you commit yourself to what seems to be a lifetime offer, you've got to understand the inherent limits to such a warranty.

Simply, nothing is indefinite, and though a warranty is expressed that it is valid for a lifetime,

contrary to your intuition, it does not necessarily mean your lifetime.  Often times, in small-print words of the warranty, to which you agree at the time of signing or otherwise accepting such a warranty, the company defines "lifetime" as a definite period of time that's far shorter than what you would expect.  Absent this expressed definition of "lifetime," as a matter of default, what "lifetime" really means is that the warranty will last for as long as the life of the company that is offering the warranty.  As soon as the company no longer exists, the lifetime warranty no longer is valid and enforceable--it has essentially "gone up in smoke" with the company that no longer exists.

So, in practically all circumstances, a good way to look at lifetime warranties is to immediately consider them as really LIMITED lifetime warranties, with limits as to their duration of validation.  In fact, if you come across a lifetime warranty without the preceding word, "limited," this should immediately raise red flags about the company's forthright business practices.

In short, be weary of "lifetime" warranties.
