Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Miscellaneous Informational Topics

Informational Topic:

Replacement parts, what you need to know about "brand-name auto manufacturer" replacement parts and "generic" replacement parts.

The Information You Need:

Auto replacement parts are just like any other consumer product in that there are the "brand-name" parts bearing the names of vehicle manufacturers and the "generic" parts bearing no vehicle manufacturer name.  What you need to know is that other than the brand-name feature, brand-name auto parts and generic auto parts are often the same since both types of parts are most often manufactured by the same vehicle replacement part manufacturers to begin with.  In other words, vehicle manufacturers do not necessarily make their own auto parts, but get most of their brand-name auto parts from the same manufacturers that manufacture the generic auto parts.  Brand-name auto replacement parts are sold by car dealerships or other authorized specialty vendors.  Generic auto replacement parts are sold by any auto care store.

With that said, just as with any consumer product that is a brand name has a better box appearance than that of the leading generic consumer product alternative, the brand-name auto replacement part comes with a longer warranty period than that of a generic auto replacement part.  If the new brand-name auto replacement part fails in any way after its installation by a car dealership during the longer warranty period, all involved replacement part costs and required labor to install the replacement part are covered by the manufacturer.  Though, suffice it to say, any brand-name auto replacement part that fails after the warranty period, like any warranty you would receive for a generic auto replacement part, will leave you with the financial burden of having it replaced.

So, when trying to decide over a brand-name auto replacement part over a generic auto replacement part, remember that usually the difference is the varying duration of the warranty period for the auto replacement part you need.
