 Never Stop Improving - White

Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Maintenance Issues:

How to winterize your carburetor engine so as to help prevent startup difficulty.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Carburetor and choke cleaner in a spray can

  • Old toothbrush or other similarly bristled brush

Guide:

A good way to help prevent your vehicle from having a difficult time starting during the winter season is to remove the dirt, gum, carbon and otherwise corrosive deposits found accumulated on and around the linkage and passages of your vehicle's automatic choke. Otherwise, with such dirt and other said detrimental deposits left intact and unremoved, the choke plate of your vehicle's automatic choke will malfunction and be left open, instead of closed, causing the engine not to receive the gas-enriched mixture it needs the most during the trying times of the cold season.

For this very reason, every year, just before the winter-cold season, you should use a can of carburetor and choke cleaner, that can be purchased from an automotive parts store, to help you clean your carburetor as part of your winterization of it. Specifically, spray this cleaner on the choke plate, linkage and any passages of the choke according to the instructions of the cleaner manufacturer, and complement this spraying with your use of a toothbrush/brush to help scrub and remove any stubborn deposit accumulation of any foreign substance (such as dirt, gum, etc.).

Your doing this preventive cleaning will go a long way in preparing your carburetor for cold-weather rides.
