Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine uses too much oil.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

If you notice that your vehicle's engine is using way more oil than normal, the following may be probable causes of this vehicle problem that you should consider checking:

  • First and foremost, your noticing too much oil use may merely be an illusion as a result of incorrectly using and reading your vehicle's oil dipstick;

  • The engine may be leaking oil, so check for leaks underneath the vehicle;

  • The oil you're using may be inappropriate because it does not have the vehicle manufacturer's recommended oil viscosity rating;

  • You may be driving your vehicle unusually too fast or causing your vehicle to endure other strenuous driving tasks, such as hauling more loads more than usual, and even of greater size;

  • The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system may be malfunctioning; or

  • The piston rings or valve guides may be worn out.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your vehicle's problem, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the problem.
