Problem:

Engine surges.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

If you notice that your vehicle's engine surges, causing the vehicle to seem to speed up and slow down on its own, the following may be probable causes of this vehicle problem that you should consider checking:

  • The torque converter clutch or air conditioner compressor may be malfunctioning;

  • The spark plugs may be damaged or otherwise worn out;

  • The engine vacuum may be malfunctioning;

  • The fuel filter may be clogged or otherwise damaged;

  • For electronic fuel injection (EFI) engine, the fuel pressure may not be adequate;

  • The fuel system may be suffering from a leak;

  • For the carburetor engine, the fuel pump may be malfunctioning; or

  • The oxygen sensor may be dirty/contaminated.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your vehicle's problem, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the problem.
