Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine stalls when the engine becomes hot and the weather is hot (about 80° F).

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

There are a variety of reasons why your vehicle's engine may stall when the engine becomes hot and the outside temperature is around 80° F, and they include the following:

  • A condition known as vapor lock occurs in which the engine stalls because the gas in the fuel line has turned from a liquid form into a foam substance that inherently is unable to be channeled down to the engine where the gas is needed;

  • A condition known as percolation occurs in which the engine, with a carburetor system, stalls as a result of the engine's becoming flooded because of the heat-induced overflow of gas from the carburetor; or

  • The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system, particularly its valve, may be malfunctioning, causing the vehicle's engine not to receive the proper amount of air and gas, and to actually allow moisture to permeate and accumulate inside the engine, ultimately cultivating a detrimental pasty slime therein.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your engine's stalling when the engine is hot and it's generally hot outside, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the cause of your engine's malfunction.
