Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine stalls when the engine becomes cold.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

There are a variety of reasons why your vehicle's engine may stall when the engine becomes cold, and they include the following:

  • The thermostatic air cleaner system's air control valve may not be operating correctly:  When the engine is turned on, the air control valve should incrementally open, bit by bit, until opened all the way about 5 minutes into the startup so as to allow a clear passage to be made through the once-blocked air cleaner snorkel.  Probable causes of the air control valve's not being able to open the passage to the air cleaner snorkel completely would be the malfunction of the valve's vacuum motor or temperature sensor;

  • The engine might not be receiving the appropriate amount of cooled and heated air because of the malfunction of the vehicle's manifold heat control valve, which has similar functions to that of other valves, like the air control valve; or

  • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, particularly its valve, may be malfunctioning, causing the vehicle's engine not to receive the proper amount of air and gas.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your engine's stalling when the engine is cold, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the cause of your engine's malfunction.
