Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine stalls when the air conditioner is turned on.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

For the average driver not too familiar with the inner workings of vehicle mechanics, it would undoubtedly seem weird for him that his turning on the air conditioner of his vehicle would prompt the vehicle's engine to stall--and, what is more, this driver would then express regret for ever turning on the air conditioning in the first place.  Though, the driver, and certainly you, should not have to live with that regret, let alone fear of turning the air conditioner on again because it should work without causing the engine to malfunction.  There are actions you can take to enjoy the air conditioning in your vehicle without sacrificing the operability of your vehicle's engine.

What should be of focus in diagnosing the cause of the AC-engine stall reaction is the idle speed control (ISC), including its electrical circuit.  The ISC is most probably the cause of your stalling problem when the air conditioner is turned on.  The ISC has been known to cause engine stalling when additional energy loads, such as the turning on of power steering in addition to the turning on of air conditioning, are brought to bear.  An automotive technician should test out the ISC, including that of its circuitry, and, if found to be defective, have it replaced.  You may want to explore the possibility of using an automatic idle speed control (AISC), with a closed-loop feature, as it may prevent such a stall in the future.  Alternatively, if the ISC is fine, your stall causer may center around the engine computer, requiring it to be replaced or reconfigured so as to prevent any future engine stall as a result of the use of the vehicle's air conditioner.
