Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine totally quits when the engine becomes cold and the weather is relatively cold.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

There are a variety of reasons, some commonly known and others not so well known, why your vehicle's engine may quit operating, and they include the following:

  • For temperatures at the freezing mark of 32° F or below, there may be ice that has formed in the gas tank, which may require the use of antifreeze appropriate for your vehicle to be poured into the gas tank;

  • For temperatures at 50° F or below, if your engine is equipped with a carburetor system, if a dirty air filter is not the problem, the automatic choke, particularly the choke pull-off/choke vacuum break and choke linkage, may be malfunctioning, needing maintenance attention; or

  • For temperatures at 50° F or below, if your engine is equipped with a fuel injection system, if a dirty air filter is not the problem, the cold start valve and/or the air flow meter may be malfunctioning, needing maintenance attention.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your engine's quitting when the engine is cold and the weather is cold, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the cause of your engine's failure.
