Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine hesitates when accelerating.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

There are a variety of reasons why your vehicle's engine may hesitate as you accelerate, and they include the following:

  • The electronic engine control system may be malfunctioning;

  • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system valve may be malfunctioning;

  • The accelerator pump of an engine with a carburetor system that provides the extra gas for the acceleration may be malfunctioning;

  • The carburetor float may be malfunctioning;

  • A vacuum hose of the engine may be damaged and causing leaks; or

  • A gasket of the engine may be damaged and causing leaks.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your engine's hesitation when you press the gas pedal to accelerate, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the cause of your engine's malfunction.
