Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Engine System

Problem:

Engine abruptly quits/dies, and does so periodically, while driving.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

When your vehicle's engine suddenly quits/dies, and does so often, while driving, you should pay particularly close attention to the following in diagnosing and ultimately fixing the cause of such a hazardous engine failure: The electrical ignition system of the engine.

The electrical ignition system is, in many ways, the heart of the engine, providing the engine the power it needs to operate.  With this said, any disruptions between this electrical system and the engine, the engine's performance consequently suffers.

Thus, of the electrical ignition system, the most probable part that is malfunctioning to the point of the engine's sudden quit/dying is the part that essentially connects the electrical ignition system itself to the engine, which is the connector that runs from the electronic control unit to the distributor.

This connector, which accumulates tension over time, can cause the engine to quit all of a sudden when it is subtly dislocated as a result of inevitable on-the-road vibrations.  This repeats often as you drive, which explains the sudden on-again, off-again operability of the engine.

An automotive technician should make sure of this through tests, and ultimately if your engine situation is as that of the above, you should have the connector that connects the electrical control unit to the distributor of your vehicle replaced.
