Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Emission System

Problem:

Gas odor in the vehicle.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

Gas odor in the vehicle, depending on whether it is temporary or persistent, can be caused by a variety of factors.  The following may be probable causes of this vehicle's problem that you should consider checking:

(i.)    Temporary Exposure to Gas Odor:

  • The gas cap of your fuel tank may not be properly secured; or

  • You may accidentally cause gas to be spilled out of the gas pump nozzle and onto the side of the opening of the gas tank.

(ii.)    Persistent Exposure to Gas Odor:

  • The gas cap, no matter how well you attempt to secure it, no longer has its seal because it's worn out;

  • The vapor vent lines may be damaged;

  • The vapor vent valve may be damaged;

  • The fuel evaporation emission system's charcoal canister, particularly its filter, may be dirty; or

  • There may be a hole somewhere in the gas tank, and it doesn't necessarily have to be at the bottom.

Any one of the above can be the cause of your vehicle's problem, so it would be best to pay attention to the above probable causes when attempting to diagnose and fix the problem.
