Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Emission System

Maintenance Issues:

How to avoid a false emission-test failure.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Guide:

One of the most common ways of inadvertently causing your vehicle to fail the state's mandated emission test simply has to do with how long you sit in your idling vehicle in line, waiting for the test to be conducted.  Specifically, your vehicle's emission system was designed to work at its best when the vehicle is actually being driven, at which time the emission system components are inherently warmed up to operate correctly, and not when the vehicle is idling in a parking lot, which causes the emission system components not to ideally perform under such non-vehicle-driving, relatively cool temperatures.

Thus, waiting for your vehicle to be checked by an emission-test technician will cause your idling engine's temperature to rise, but, depending on the length of your wait--which is often long--it will likely cause your emission system to be not ready to be tested when next in line since the emission-system temperature is not up to that of which is inherent of driving, which would otherwise cause the components of the emission system to kick in and work correctly.

The solution to this is quite simple:  Take your vehicle to the emission-testing center in your area during non-peek times so as to ensure your vehicle will be tested right away as opposed to following a parade of cars ahead of you.  If you must wait in line--and really just something you should do as an ensuring step--just before you are up to have your vehicle tested, put your vehicle to P/park and then press on the gas pedal so as to cause the increase of your engine's idling, which will, in turn, bring your emission system's temperature to about where it needs to be in order to get a fair emission-test reading.

So, read and take from this article the tip given so as to avoid a common inadvertent act that can cause an unnecessary failure of an emission test and the inherent cost of time and money to have the test retaken.
