Hey, you're in the vehicle / car zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cars / Trucks / Vans Category: Brakes

Problem:

Brake power loss occurs in cold weather and only is restored upon warming up the engine through having it run idle for a bit.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Appropriate vacuum hose replacement

Solution:

If your brake system experiences a failure, particularly the loss of braking power, when it is cold, and only restores its power when the engine is warmed up after idling for a bit, the cold may be affecting the inner components of the braking system, particularly the vacuum hose of the power brake booster.  Specifically, because of the cold weather, an icy substance may have formed in the hose if it has been worn out to the extent it has been permeable to moisture.  Given this, to prevent having to go through the process of having to warm up the engine first before the brakes start to work, you may have to replace the vacuum hose that connects to the power brake booster.
