Hey, you're in the storage zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Plastic Tubs/Totes/Boxes Category

Improvement Project:

How to store your items: use plastic tubs/totes/boxes.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Guide:

When considering storage options, one of the least expensive and least burdensome ways of becoming organized is using plastic tubs/totes/boxes in which to store your items, such as those made by Rubbermaid.  Initially, one might think that they would need many of such plastic boxes, and having so many boxes would just be too cumbersome or otherwise too ugly.  However, such plastic boxes can be a good way of storing your items, and relatively securely, too, when compared to the option of using cardboard boxes that are no match to plastic boxes.

Using plastic boxes that seal securely as opposed to just cardboard boxes is especially important when considering to store such boxes in places where, despite your best efforts, they may encounter floods, such as in basements.  Cardboard boxes, while readily available for free from supermarkets and the sort, will not withstand the wet encounters of floods and, thus, whatever is stored in them will be ruined.  On the other hand, you’ll have a better chance of saving what’s in securely sealed plastic boxes; the plastic boxes are less subject to water permeability and may even float in a flood to avoid damage to what is inside such boxes.

What is more, securely sealed plastic boxes are also better able to keep out rodents (like mice) and bugs, including destructive bugs like moths, from your stored personal items, such as clothes.  For safe and secure paper storage, you might consider covering your important papers that are to be stored with acid-free paper/material.

Plastic boxes can be stored virtually anywhere, from the basement to the attic to the closet to just in your room.  Buying several boxes of the same kind will allow you to conveniently and efficiently stack them on top of each other so as to conserve the use of space.
