Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Walls Category: Exterior Walls: Caulking

Improvement Project:

How to generally know when to remove old caulking and have it replaced with new caulking.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Screwdriver

  • Your hands

Guide:

At some point, your eyes may clue you in on possibly worn-out, failing, old caulking around your house.  Examine it a bit more before you bring out your caulking gun for re-caulking purposes.  If such caulking starts to crumble or fall apart merely by your hands touching it or it begins to crack with the simple nudging of a screwdriver in it, then you'll have the confirmation you need that the old caulking must ripped off and replaced with new caulking.  When you do replace the caulking, make sure the caulking you are applying is good for your situation--whether such caulking is designed for the outdoors, whether such caulking can be painted on, etc.

Caution: When dealing with sharp objects, such as a screwdriver, make sure you take precautions; read all product manufacturer instructions.
