Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Walls Category: Exterior Walls: Caulking

Improvement Project:

How to caulk wood siding.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Caulking gun

  • Siliconized acrylic latex caulking tube (in the appropriate color, but white is most common)

  • Flexible joint knife

  • Scraper

  • Medium-level sandpaper

  • Paint thinner

  • Rag/cloth

Guide:

You may notice that the caulking covering crevices found between the wood frame of your house and sidings is becoming worn-out or otherwise in need of re-caulking.  Keeping your caulking maintained around your siding is especially important for a variety of reasons, from helping to contribute to the energy efficiency of your house to keeping your house free from pesky pests, etc.

Caution: When dealing with chemicals, such as those found in paint thinner, make sure you take precautions, like wearing gloves and goggles; read all product manufacturer instructions.

Getting rid of the old caulking around your wood siding and replacing it with new caulking can be done in a few steps, and here's how:

  1. Using a scraper, scrape off all the old, coming-apart caulking and paint found on and around the wood siding.

  2. Then, use medium-level sandpaper to sand away any old caulking and paint remnants where the new caulking will be applied.

  3. As may be necessary, per the manufacturer's instructions, using a rag/cloth, apply paint thinner on the area to get any remaining paint removed.  Allow the paint thinner, as applicable, to dry, per the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Next, with the appropriate caulking tube already cocked in the caulking gun, use the caulking gun to apply the new caulking in the places of the siding where the old caulking was previously removed.   (If you plan to paint over this caulking, remember to use the caulking that will tolerate paint, as some caulking product types do not tolerate the application of paint, cracking after such a paint application.)

  5. As may be applicable, use a joint knife to go over all the caulking in an effort to make sure it has been applied as neatly and nicely as possible.

That's how to get rid of the old caulking around your wood siding and replace it with new caulking.
