Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Walls Category: Exterior Walls: Caulking

Improvement Project:

How to caulk exterior fixtures, like water spigots.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Caulking gun

  • Siliconized acrylic latex caulking tube (in the appropriate color, but white is most common)

  • Screwdriver

  • Flexible joint knife

Guide:

If you haven't already, you should seal all the sides of the exterior fixtures that are attached to your house walls with caulking, and the condition of this caulking should be checked upon frequently to make sure it is replaced with new caulking when necessary.  Caulking around the sides of these fixtures is necessary for a variety of reasons, from helping to contribute to the energy efficiency of your house to keeping your house free from pesky pests, etc.

To caulk around a fixture, like a water spigot, can be done in a few steps, and here's how:

  1. As may be applicable, using a screwdriver, unscrew the screws and any mounting plate that hold the exterior fixture in place on an outside wall of your house.

  2. If it has already received caulking, but is old and worn out, use a joint knife or screwdriver to remove as much of this old caulking around the exterior fixture as possible.

  3. With the appropriate caulking tube already cocked in the caulking gun, use the caulking gun to apply caulking behind and around the mounting plate.

  4. With a screwdriver, reinstall the mounting plate and screws, as may be applicable, in order to securely fasten the fixture back into place.

  5. As may be possible, with the caulking gun, neatly apply caulking around the outside of the sides of this fixture, using your joint knife to ensure that the caulking is applied as neatly and nicely as possible.

That's how to caulk exterior fixtures, like water spigots.
