Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Walls Category: Exterior Walls: Brick / Masonry Walls

Problem:

Mold discoloring brick wall.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Bleach (found at the house, usually the laundry room)

  • Water

  • Bucket

  • Stiff bristle brush

  • Garden hose (hooked up to faucet for cold water use)

Solution:

So, you walk by your brick wall one day and notice mold or even mildew all over it, causing it to have a gross discoloration effect.  You ask yourself what you should do.  Well, you won't need to go far in obtaining the necessary equipment and products to get rid of mold.  In fact, all you'll need to do is to get some bleach (usually found in one's laundry room) and water:  Prepare a solution mix ratio of 50:50 (50 parts bleach to 50 parts water) in a bucket.  Dip a stiff bristle brush into the buck of this solution mix and immediately use the drenched brush to scrub the mold or mildew off the wall.  Continue to scrub with this brush, frequently dipping it into the bucket so as to apply an adequate amount of the solution on the affected wall each time, until you have covered the whole area of the wall affected by either the mold or mildew.  After about two hours of having already applied the solution mix to the entire area of the wall affected by either mold or mildew, douse the affected area with cold water, using a garden hose. Repeat this process as is necessary.

Caution: When dealing with chemicals, such as those found in bleach, make sure you take precautions, such as wearing gloves and goggles; read all product manufacturer instructions.  Also, make sure to take all precautionary measures in dealing with mold, mildew, including requiring to wear a mask if need be.

That should help get rid of the mold or mildew and, correspondingly, the discoloration of the wall.
