Improvement Project:

How to safely work on a phone.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Guide:

Here are some things that should be a part of your work procedure and consideration when working on a phone:

  • Disconnect your phone before working on it, first and foremost.  Caution:  Because phone wires carry a small amount of electrical current/voltage, before working on any phone, make sure the phone is disconnected from the phone interface box (that is usually located on an outside wall), and this includes disconnecting its phone wire from the telephone jack.  Otherwise you may become the victim of a shock.

  • Never work on your phone during a storm, even if your phone is disconnected.   Lightning can strike your phone and/or phone wires, which may, in turn, strike you.

  • Whenever possible, install a phone jack on an interior wall as opposed to an exterior wall.  Exterior walls usually encompass far more complicated obstructions to the wiring of a phone jack than interior walls, and such obstructions include metal braces, etc.

These are just some things that should be a part of your work procedure and consideration when working on a phone.  Call your local phone company for advice and more tips.
