Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Roofs and Components Category:

Applicable to all Roofs: Repairs in General

Problem:

Roof leaks are causing an inside flood of leaked water, threatening to ruin the floor below the roof.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Plastic sheeting/plastic tarps

  • Staples

  • Staple gun

  • Duct tape

  • Mop

  • Bucket

  • Mop wringer bucket

Solution:

Your roof is leaking a lot, causing a flood inside your house or other building.  What are you to do? Aside from trying to stop the leak, you may opt to protect the first floor below the leaking roof.  To do this, use plastic sheeting / plastic tarps (those that are waterproof) to lay on the floor below the roofs, with the sides of the plastic sheeting / plastic tarps uplifted and pressed against the interior walls of the house so as to have the sheeting/tarps become makeshift "bowls" that capture all leaking water.  To ensure that the sheeting/tarps maintain this "bowl" posture, duct tape or otherwise staple the sides of these sheeting/tarps onto the walls.

In an effort to curb the amount of leaking water that pours down into the makeshift sheeting/tarp "bowls," on an often basis, depending on the severity of the roof leaks, use a mop and a bucket/mop wringer bucket to mop up such accumulating water from the "bowls," and unload the bucket of water outside.

Caution: When securing plastic sheeting/tarps over an area receiving water, be careful with your steps, as the plastic sheeting/tarps may be slippery wet; read all product manufacturer instructions.

Of course, using plastic sheeting/tarps is only a temporary fix until the weather clears up for you to actually perform a permanent roof repair to eliminate the occurrence of leaks.

That's what it takes to initially respond to roof leaks flooding your interior, threatening to ruin the floor below the roof.
