Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Heating Systems Category: Water Heaters

Improvement Project:

How to economically operate a water heater, making it as efficient as possible in order to decrease your water heater operating cost.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Guide:

These days, it pays in a variety of ways to conserve energy.  While there are relatively new ways to save energy and, thus, save on operating costs, like switching from regular light bulbs to fluorescent lights, an immediate action you can take right now without having to invest in a new product to conserve is to wisely adjust the setting of your water heater.

The thermostat of your water heater should never be set to 150° or above because not only does it decrease your safety (relative to a lower setting), it costs more to operate your water heater constantly at that high thermostat setting.  Instead of 150° or above, you may want to try to set your water heater thermostat to about 130-135°.  Lowering your thermostat setting of the water heater will allow for a much more economically-efficient operation of such a heater, permitting the use of less energy, and consequently the less expenditure of costs, to maintain a lower temperature that is normal rather than an exorbitantly high temperature, all without sacrificing comfort.

So, without much effort, one can find ways to conserve energy and costs, and even with something as traditional and commonly found in a house as a water heater.
