Heating Systems Category: Fireplaces

Problem:

Room cools rather than heats up after lighting a fire in the fireplace.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Solution:

If you find that your room cools rather than heats up after lighting a fire in your fireplace, you have at least two options on how to go about fixing this: 1) Be considerate of the size of your fire; and 2) Modify the fireplace, itself.  As to the first option, what is meant by being considerate of the size of the fire you ignite in your fireplace is that you should make an effort to minimize the size of the fire in your fireplace, as very big, bellowing fires can cause an adverse effect:  "Sucking up" of all the air in the room, including what has been heated up, through the chimney, leaving the room with whatever cold air that takes its place. So, the quick fix to this is to ensure that you have relatively moderate fires in your fireplace.

The other option, which is really the long-term fix, is to add an air vent to the inside top opening of the fireplace.  This air vent should be able to prevent this "sucking up" of heated air when you have a relatively big fire in your fireplace.

These are options that you may consider looking into when encountering the problem of your room cooling down rather than heating up after lighting the fireplace.
