Improvement Project:

How to choose the best wood for burning in your fireplace.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

Guide:

There are a variety of wood that you can avail yourself to for burning in your fireplace.  Of course, first and foremost, you should never introduce treated, stained, painted or otherwise chemically altered wood into your fireplace because doing that can cause the release of dangerous chemicals into the air you and your family breathe.

Wood that is really good for fireplace-burning is hardwood as opposed to softwood.  Hardwoods, in particular, that are good for burning, giving off enough heat, include elm, maple and oak.  You may opt to even be frugal in recycling the scrap wood created from construction sites around your area; be sure the wood is freshly cut, and not necessarily painted or treated, of course.

So, when it comes to stocking up on fire wood for your fireplace, for longer burning, more-heat-generating fires, seek hardwood over softwood.
