Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Flooring Category: Wood Flooring

Problem:

Squeaking wood floorboards.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Hot glue gun sticks (for wood)

  • Hot melt glue gun

  • Caulking gun

  • Caulking tube (for wood)

  • Helper

  • Pencil

Solution:

Your wood floor squeaks when you walk over a certain part of it.  It's a nuisance, to say the least, and an embarrassment when guests encounter it, too. An easy fix to this is to first have a helper walk on the wood floor where you have encountered the squeaking before so that you, at the same time, can exactly mark with a pencil from where of the floorboards the squeaking is coming in order to pinpoint where you will focus your repair.  Knowing where the squeaking is coming from, you can silence it with either the use of a hot melt glue gun, equipped with the right glue stick, or with a cocked-and-ready caulking gun:  Use a hot melt glue gun with the right glue stick or a caulking gun with the right cocked caulking tube to have either adhesive applied along both sides of the joists of the affected floorboards, and including adding the adhesive material between such joists and the sub-flooring.

Caution: Of course, when dealing with electrical devices, such as a hot melt glue gun, that generate heat, make sure you take precautions; read all product manufacturer instructions.

That's what it takes to silence a squeaky wood floor.
