Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Doors and Components Category

Improvement Project:

How to avoid a screen or storm door from coming off of its hinges due to powerful winds.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Door chain retainer

  • Screwdriver (or other fastening device as determined by the manufacturer's use of fasteners)

Guide:

With a powerful, big gust of wind, a screen door or storm door can be blown off of its hinges or otherwise compromised in its ability to remain in place.  A good way to help reinforce your door's ability to withstand such a destructive gust of wind is to install a door chain retainer on it.

The installation of a door chain retainer is a common practice.  Follow the chain retainer manufacturer's instructions for specific instructions.  In general, one part of the chain retainer will be attached with fasteners--often screws--to the door frame's head jamb and the other chain part of it will be attached with fasteners--when the door is positioned wide open--to the corresponding appropriate area of the door at such an opened position (as it best reveals where the chain should be mounted).

With the door chain retainer, your door will be in a better position to withstand unruly winds.
