Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Decks and Porches Category

Problem:

Soil exposed underneath an elevated deck erodes away when it rains.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Gravel

  • Wheelbarrow

  • Shovel

  • Bow rake (welded head)

Solution:

Just as it is important to keep up the appearance of your wood deck, it is important that the soil that surrounds it, and particularly the soil that is found underneath it, is maintained and not eroded over time as a result of rain washouts due to heavy downpours.

To help keep the soil from eroding underneath and around your deck, wheel in a wheelbarrow full of gravel, and shovel this gravel on top of the soil that is prone to erosion.  Use a bow rake to ultimately go over the gravel that has been shoveled onto the ground in order to ensure a level layer of it has been spread all over the area.

That's what it takes to minimize the erosion of your soil around and underneath your deck.
