Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Decks and Porches Category

Improvement Project:

How to know when a wood deck needs to be resealed with another coat of sealer.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Cup of water

Guide:

Every now and then, you'll want to know for yourself, before it's too late or otherwise just not practical to act, whether your wood deck is in need of another treatment of sealer so that you can apply the appropriate amount of sealer now as opposed to later.

The easiest and best way to determine whether your deck needs such a sealer application is to simply pour a cup of water onto the wood boards of the deck:  If the poured water on the wood boards sort of is soaked in/absorbed, you'll need to definitely reseal your deck; if, on the other hand, the poured water form into beads of water on the wood boards, you don't need to reseal since the boards have shown to have retained the water-resistant feature you desire for the preservation of your deck from the outdoor elements like rain.
