 Turn 21 today!

Hey, you're in the home improvement zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Cooling and Ventilation Systems Category:

Portable  Room Air Conditioners / Window Air Conditioners

Problem:

Portable room air conditioner / window air conditioner will not turn on at all.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Light lamp (or similar house appliance / device known to work for testing of electrical output purposes)

  • Manufacturer's instruction manual for the portable room air conditioner / window air conditioner

  • Circuit breaker fuse replacement

Solution:

If your portable room air conditioner / window air conditioner will not turn on at all, there are generally three causes: 1) Your air conditioner is without power; 2) Your air conditioner's settings are incorrectly set; or 3) Your air conditioner is failing in operation (and must be replaced or repaired by one with specialized air conditioning skills for your particular air conditioner).

If your portable room air conditioner / window air conditioner will not turn on at all, do the following:

  1. First and foremost, make sure the cord of your air conditioner is actually plugged into an outlet (that emits the appropriate voltage) and set to the "turn-on" setting.

  2. If the air conditioner is still not working at all, your outlet may not be receiving electrical power itself.  To check, plug a light lamp (or similar device known to work) into that exact outlet.

  3. If the light lamp (or similar device known to work before) does not turn on, your outlet may not be receiving electrical power because the circuit breaker has overloaded; reset the circuit breaker, and if need be, replace the circuit breaker fuse.  (See the electrical section for this.)

  4. Alternatively, if the light lamp (or similar device known to work before) actually does turn on when you plug it into the exact outlet, this will eliminate any doubt that your outlet is faulty, as it is clearly not.  (If the light lamp is working, the outlet is working.)

  5. Knowing that your outlet is not the problem, make sure that your air conditioner is not only set to on, but that the thermostat of the air conditioner is set to "cool" or that otherwise the temperature setting is actually below the room temperature (as your portable air conditioner may be automated to turn on when the room temperature does not meet the desired temperature setting).

  6. If the above does not work, it is very likely that your air conditioner is in need of specialized repair; consult your manufacturer's instruction manual for repair options and, if need be, contact a repair technician specializing in portable room air conditioner / window air conditioner repair.  (Otherwise, and it may be more economically feasible than paying the hourly rate of a repair technician, buy a portable room air conditioner / window air conditioner replacement.)
