Hey, you're in the garden zone--YOUR HANDYMAN ZONE!

Composting Category

Problem:

Pests, such as flies, hover around your compost pile.

Tools / Materials (See Below for Applicability):

  • Ammonia

  • Tarp

  • Soil

Solution:

You've got a great compost pile going in  your yard, but what's ruining it are all the pests it is attracting, from skunks, raccoons to flies.  The sudden onslaught appearance of such pests have caused you to consider altogether abandoning the idea of having a compost pile in your yard.  Before taking this extreme measure, you should consider taking the steps discussed below that may greatly reduce the appearance of such pests to a tolerable level or even eliminate their presence in your yard altogether.

To help get rid of the pests, you first may try to eliminate the attractive decomposing scent coming from such a compost pile of yours.  To do this, you should consider spraying or otherwise applying a bit of ammonia around your compost pile; read the ammonia manufacturer's instructions and take all necessary precautions when using chemicals, such as ammonia.  Applied correctly, animals like skunks, raccoons and the like will steer clear of your compost pile.

To get rid of the flies and other insects' attraction to the wetness of the compost pile, mix the pile up with dry soil.

Finally, in addition to doing both of the above, or otherwise one of the above, completely cover the compost pile with a tarp.  This tarp will help fend off the pests.  Make this tarp is securely attached around all over the compost pile.

So, there you have it, the means of maintaining a compost pile while keeping the pests away.
