The same is true about other changes in the job market:  As jobs like being a travel agent have faded away, other jobs have come to be in relatively high demand, and they often come with high pay as well, which include the following eight, in alphabetical order (click on either one to learn more):

Computer Repair Specialists / Engineers

Criminal Justice/Security Administration Personnel

Event Planners

HVAC Technicians

Medical Technicians/Assistants

Special Education Teachers

Veterinarians

  • Automotive Technicians

As more and more vehicles hit the road, more and more will need to be serviced to maintain their operability.  Granted that there are many automotive technicians, but many of these technicians have not been trained to service a majority of the newer vehicles on the road, which are much more technologically advanced.  The proper service maintenance of these vehicles requires one to be schooled on the advanced technologies incorporated in them that separate such vehicles from the traditional vehicles of yesterday.  So, pursuing a career now in the automotive industry can put you in the advantage of acquiring the newer technical skills many longtime/"old-school" automotive technicians do not have.

  • Criminal Justice/Security Administration

The world in which we live is drastically different security-wise than it is was 10 years ago.  To address international and national threats to the safety and wellbeing of the United States, a whole new extension of the executive branch of the federal government was created, namely the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in the aftermath of the 9/11 Terror Attacks.  In effect, 22 essential federal agencies, charged with broad security and protective duties, were joined together as part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  With this creation, security and protective measures in place have been enhanced and additional measures have been created.

Similarly, with the creation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has come about the increasing expansion of the U.S. Department of Justice, primarily as to its criminal investigative and enforcement agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  The duties of such agencies, especially those of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have expanded, namely to fight terror nationally and internationally, in addition to its enlarged mainstream functions of apprehending those involved in federal crimes.

The job of federal agents is on the rise with such newly created and otherwise enhanced security and protective measures.  In fact, the most recent and public display of enhancement is the vast improvement of border security.  As a result, more and more border agents as part of the U.S. Homeland Security's Custom and Border Protection agency have been hired, and a great many more will be needed.

Crime has risen overall.  In fact, in January 2009, the Police Executive Research Forum reported that of 233 police agencies polled throughout the United States, 44% stated they had definitely noted a rise in the commission of crimes, which they had attributed to the volatile economy.  It is not a surprise that the U.S. incarceration rate is the highest in the world:  As of June 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that 762 per 100,000 residents are incarcerated.

This all entails the inevitable increased demand for criminal justice personnel, ranging from police officers on the forefront of crime, investigators in the pursuit of leads to resolving unsolved crimes, judicial processing officials to assist in the processing of criminal suspects through the court system to correctional officers ensuring those convicted of crimes serve out their sentences.
